Fed Speaks, U.S.-N.K. Speak, But Markets Wait For More News On Trade

Stocks closed mixed yesterday with the Dow and the S&P off slightly, while the Nasdaq and the Russell 2000 Index were up slightly.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell continued his semi-annual testimony to Congress yesterday, (this time to the House Finance Committee), where he stayed on message with his themes of monetary "patience", "muted" inflation, "solid" economic growth, and "stronger" wage growth.

Meanwhile, President Trump was in Vietnam for the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. A second day of talks takes place today and everyone will be waiting to hear comments from both on what was accomplished. As I said yesterday, nobody is expecting anything concrete on denuclearization (although you never know), but there are hopes that the two countries will announce a formal end to the Korean War, which would replace the armistice that's been in place since 1953.

But none of the above moved stocks in any meaningful way.

What the market really wants is more info on what's happening with the U.S.-China trade talks, and a date for when President Trump and President Xi will meet face to face to presumably sign a deal.

The market continues to tread water near their highs of the year. But good news on the trade talks should definitely help stocks soar to new all-time highs.

But there are plenty of industries that don't need to wait for a trade talk catalyst to cash in on the prospect of big returns.

And one of those is the burgeoning marijuana industry. This industry is going thru record change and it's happening at breakneck speed. And it's easy to see why. In 2017 the industry was estimated at $9 billion. But by 2020 it's expected to grow to $32 billion. And by 2025, it could soar to over $146 billion.

Marijuana is now legal in all of Canada. And in the U.S. it's legal in 33 states and D.C.

Stocks Remain Near Highs Of The Year After Stronger Than Expected GDP

Stocks closed modestly lower yesterday. But after nine spectacular up weeks in a row, it's impressive how stocks continue to trade near their highs for the year.

Traders remain hungry for new news on the U.S.-China trade talks. And while they heard National Economic Council Director, Larry Kudlow, say that last week's talks were "fantastic", and that he thinks "we're headed for a remarkable, historic deal", what traders are really waiting for is a date for when President Trump and President Xi will meet to presumably close the deal and make an official announcement.

Until then though, by all accounts, "the progress has been terrific."

In other news, Q4 '18 GDP estimates were finally released and they came in better than expected at 2.6% vs. expectations for 2.2%. Analysts noted that business investment was particularly impressive. That now puts full year 2018 GDP at 2.9%. But yesterday's estimate was just the initial estimate. There will be two more revisions coming. And it won't take much to push the full year GDP to 3%. If and when that happens, it would be the first 3 percent annual print in 13 years!

The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index jumped to 64.7, a sharp increase from last month's 56.7 and views for 56.1. New orders, once again, led the way, notching their largest gain in two years. Production and backlogs were also up.

The economy looks great. Same for corporate earnings. And consumer sentiment.

The market is looking pretty great too.

So be sure you're taking full advantage of it.

Best,

Stocks Up On Friday, Nasdaq Extends Winning Streak To 10 Weeks In A Row

Stocks closed higher on Friday. And while the Dow and the Russell just barely missed out on extending their 9-week winning streak, the Nasdaq succeeded, making it 10 weeks in a row of gains – the longest winning streak in 20 years.

Not surprising given the strength of the economy, historic employment, and record corporate profits.

The market also continues to be optimistic for a U.S.-China trade deal. And while the talks, by all accounts, have been going "fantastic", what the market really wants to hear is a date for when President Trump and President Xi will meet to presumably close the deal and make an official announcement.

Once a deal is made, the threat of a trade war, which was largely responsible for last year's correction, will finally be removed, and stocks are expected to soar to new all-time highs.

But clearly, smart investors have not been sitting idly by, waiting for the news of a trade deal (if, and when, it happens) to be announced. They have been snapping up shares in earnest as this record bull market continues to make history.
