he Struggle with 1800

Here is the key section from my last commentary:

"We will probably consolidate here (1800) a little while. If the coast is clear, meaning no more global or domestic economic concerns, then stocks should break above soon on the way towards the previous highs at 1850."

That certainly held true on Monday as stocks closed at 1799.84. I personally don't care how long it takes to break above as I am already amped up at 100% long. That's because the odds still strongly favor the continuation of the bull rally.

Please don't get too cute timing your way back in if you have not done so already. That is because likely the bottom of this recent correction has been found and the risk at this stage is being left behind.

Are Stocks Overvalued?

Every other Wednesday the investment commentators get together for a lively debate. The goal is not to reach a consensus on our view of the market. Rather it fits under the heading:

"None of us is as smart as all of us."

This week battle lines were drawn between those claiming nothing but blue skies ahead versus those emphatically stating the market is overvalued by most historical measures. Yet even the valuation hawks had to admit that there is no other viable investment alternative right now for those who want a decent rate of return. Combine that with a lack of a negative catalyst (recession or Risk Off scare) and they reluctantly agreed that stocks will likely move higher before lower.

I know that is not the most optimistic outlook y ou have ever heard. But it is still plenty reason enough to be long US stocks now. I would just say that you should have a little more eye towards stocks trading at reasonable valuations to increase your odds of success. Also with the US in the latter stages of a mature bull market it is certainly time to look for ripe opportunities in the international markets.

As if Nothing Ever Happened

Just ten days ago the market was in the midst of a nasty pullback with fears of more pain to come. And in no time we are back within striking distance of the highs at 1850.

Yes, it is as if nothing ever happened. And often rounds of profit taking can be nothing more than that. Just a time to wring out excesses even though the fundamental outlook is unchanged.

In fact, the investment premise now is quite the same as we ended last year. Maybe even better when you consider that bond rates are even lower now and we have another solid earnings season in the bag.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It is best to assume the bull market is in place until a recession looms on the horizon or stock valuations get bubblicious. Neither is the case now. So rally on!
